Become a local celebrity this Oct. 6 during the Tour de Fat at Tempe Beach Park by participating in the car-for-bike swap! One lucky contestant will get to turn over their keys – and the gas-guzzlng, four-wheeled lifestyle on stage during the Tour de Fat in front of thousands!

Simply tell your story to New Belgium Brewing Company via video, photos or prose on their Tempe Tour de Fat Facebook event page and you could be the next to win!

Last year, Phoenix resident Nicole Underwood was the lucky winner, and she said she’s never been so happy.

“Giving away my car was liberating,” Nicole said. “I was so excited when the tow truck pulled up … I was happy to be rid of it.”

Trading in her old four-wheeled lifestyle for a two-wheeled one was a great way not only to become healthier, but to be more connected to her community, Nicole said.

But don’t take our word for it! See her tell her story yourself on YouTube. Click here for her story about her transition.

Want to see what an award-winning video looks like? Check out Nicole’s original submission here..

Submit your stories as soon as possible! This year, the car swap winner will get a bike from a local bike shop of their choosing.

If you are affiliated with local shops and want to be sure your shop is involved contact info@biketempe.org. For more information about the car-for-bike swap, visit www.newbelgium.com.

Most cities in the United States create “general plans” to guide future development and investment in their cities. These plans cover issues such housing, parks, and transportation. The City of Tempe is launching its general plan updating process – called “General Plan 2040.” You can learn more here, and to see the last general plan for 2030, visit here. The city will host a variety of public meetings to get feedback from residents about the plan. They will also post draft chapters for public feedback. The city’s bicyclists and pedestrians need a voice in this process.

The first public meetings are being held at the Tempe History Museum – 809 E. Southern Ave, Tempe 85282 on:

September 24th, 5-7pm
January 22, 5-7pm

If you’re interested in joining the TBAG advocacy team, please email me. We will need help to follow the process, attend all of the meetings and review draft documents to insure that the general plan includes a strong emphasis on making the city more bicycle and pedestrian friendly. We will have a meeting (details to come shortly) before the 24th to discuss our TBAG vision and priorities.

The annual New Belgium Tour de Fat is on Saturday, October 6th this year. As you know, the event is run by volunteers and all proceeds go directly to the Tempe Bicycle Action Group, Bike Saviours Bicycle Collective, the Mountain Bike Association of Arizona, and the Central Arizona Mountain Bike Patrol and others.

Volunteer are an indispensable part of the success of Tour de Fat. They make sure everyone had a great time and could share their love of bicycles.

The event in Tempe is one of the largest on New Belgium’s tour. We drew over 10,000 people last year, and we need about 300 volunteers to ensure that the event goes smoothly. As a volunteer you’ll get 2 free beer tokens & a volunteer t-shirt. Plus, it will be fun!

To sign up to volunteer, click here!
