TBAG will begin a design exercise to develop marketing materials related to bicycling, bike safety, or respectful driving – the specific campaign is still being decided. Hello bike advocates – this month has a lot of important events.

• We need your help with the bike count – a new organizing committee is forming and there is a lot to do. Email Scott to get on our planning committee list.
• We are also working with an ASU College of Design class to develop an ad campaign for bike safety – join us as we meet with the students to give them feedback in mid-February – see more info here.

As the Tempe Bicycle Action Group Youth Coordinator, I attended this year’s Youth Bike Conference in New York City to meet with other organizations and learn about programs targeting at-risk-youth. I was very impressed by the number of young people working to improve cycling throughout the country. I also learned a lot about different programs that recycle bicycles and help those in need. I attended workshops on fundraising, organizing bike rides and community advocacy. I would like to Recycle-A-Bicycle for hosting this years event. They did a great job and made everyone feel at home in the Big Apple.   http://www.recycleabicycle.org

Description: The TBAG Adult Education Committee is dedicated to provide bicycling education to the community of Tempe, Arizona and neighboring communities.

2011 Accomplishments: 4 board members became League of American Bicyclist LCI certified instructors. Grant to two individuals for LAB certified instructor training.

2012 Goals:
1. Retain a minimum of four (4) League of American Bicyclist LCI certified instructors – Completion date: N/A

2. Provide Traffic Skills 101 classes at least every other month (summer months may be excluded):
-Create Traffic Skills 101 power point and class structure – Completion date: March 2012
-Find venues for Traffic Skills 101 classes – Completion date: April 2012
-Create a Traffic Skills 101 schedule – Completion date: April 2012
-Contact Arizona State Cycling Community for advertising/promotion partnership – Completion date: April 2012

3. Partner with Arizona State Cycling Community to provide adult education through events and information outside of Traffic Skills 101.  – Completion date: February 2012

4. Partner with City of Tempe to provide TS101 classes to employees that bike commute – Completion date: 2013-2014

5. Provide other League of American Bicyclist classes – Completion date: 2014

Help Wanted (Approx. 10 people needed):
League of American Bicyclist LCI certified Instructor: Individuals certified by LAB will be able to teach Traffic Skills 101 to cyclists in the community. Duties include, but not limited to: Organizing, promoting, scheduling, and executing Traffic Skills 101 classes.
 
Instructor Assistant: Individuals will be able to assist LAB LCI certified instructors before, during and after Traffic Skills 101 classes. Duties will be determined by a LAB LCI certified instructor on an as needed basis.
 
Arizona State Cycling Community Liaison: Individual (s) duties include, but not limited to: Organizing, promoting, scheduling, and executing events and meetings with ASCC.

We’ve begun planning for the 2011 Tempe Tour de Fat which is on Oct. 15th this year. If you are interested in helping with the planning and managing an area at the event, please contact r...@biketempe.org

We also have two other events in October that need shift leaders and managers. First is the bike valet at the Tempe Octoberfest on Oct 7th-9th. We need shift managers for all three days of the event. Volunteers will receive free food and beer tickets.

We are also taking a larger role in helping the City of Tempe with the Tour de Tempe on Sunday Oct 23rd. We need a few people to help with the planning and doing route marking and setup of this event.

Chandler’s 4th Annual Summer Splash Festival: This event will be held in downtown Chandler on Saturday, June 18th, 2011 from 10am to 3pm at the  Dr. AJ Chandler Park West were T.B.A.G will be hosting a bicycle safety booth and helmet giveaway.  There will also be bounce houses, water slides, misters, swimming pools, dunk tanks, and water balloon battles. Feature rides and attractions include Lil Splash Kiddie Zone, Bubble Mania, Water Safety Kids Zone, Family Chill Zone and Pet a POOLooza. We’ve got a couple events this weekend that need some volunteer help.

Robert Chacon has recently joined the TBAG board as the new Youth Programs Director. One of the first youth events he is participating in is the Chandler Summer Splash Festival on Saturday at AJ Chandler park (Arizona Ave south of Chandler Blvd). TBAG will have a kids bike area at this festival. We’ll be talking to kids and parents about bike safety, doing some helmet decorating, and having other fun games and activities. Bicycle Public Art:   TBAG is seeking to commission an artist (or artists team) to work with to create a permanent public art piece in Tempe, in the Mitchell Park Neighborhoods area.  The project commission is for $15K and is inclusive of all design and fabrication costs associated with the project.   TBAG, the neighborhoods, and the City of Tempe will work with the artist to see the project through to construction.  The intention of the project is to create a local landmark that supports bicycle culture in Tempe.  Artists of all skill levels are encouraged to apply.  Check out http://www.biketempe.org/public-art-project/ for more information.

The training sessions for our first Tempe Bike Count are Wednesday 3/23 at 7:00pm and Saturday 3/26 at 10:00am at the Tempe Transit Center 200 E. Fifth Street (near Forest and College avenues near the light rail station) in the Cassano Room on the second floor.

At the TBAG annual meeting on Nov 7th we kicked off the planning for 2011, formed the member committees, and elected the board.

Now that we have a vision of what we want to accomplish in 2011, we need more people to help with the detailed planning for these committees and work on them throughout the year. Below you’ll find a list of the committees and who is heading them up, please email the project leaders if you can help:

Advocacy – Aaron Golub and Ryan Cook – Work with the City of Tempe, CIty of Phoenix and State of Arizona governments to advocate for bicycle facilities, bicycle related policy, and other governmental issues related to bicyclists.

Events and Rider Facilitation – Ryan Guzy and Joe Perez – Set the dates and budget for each event and then plan and staff each event. We will also work on rider facilitation this year such as a bike rack program and the bike friendly business program.

Social Rides – Jeremy Deatherage – Fun rides including the monthly Third Friday Ride. Plan these rides, their destinations, and get the word out.

Adult Education – Tom Tomczyk, Marcus Wirthgen and Ashley Lanoue (ASU Liaison) – Educate cyclists on safe and effective cycling, get more people certified as cycling instructors, work with ASU on cyclist education and awareness programs.

Bike Count – Sam Bollinger – Count cyclists at key points in Tempe, and eventually, around the valley. This will be the key to many of our advocacy efforts in the coming years. We need these hard numbers when we are working with Government and other organizations to show them the impact cycling has in our community.

Youth Programs – Leader needed! – Work with local schools and youth groups to teach safe cycling to the youth. We have partnerships in place to work on these programs. We need someone to champion this committee. Please contact s...@biketempe.org if you can help.

Fundraising and Grants – Andrew Hamilton and Eric Iverson – Work on grant applications and contacting organizations and foundations to increase fundraising sources. Plan more yearly fundraising events.

Board Election

Three new board members were also elected to the TBAG board. They are: Ashley Lanoue, Andrew Hamilton, and Ryan Cook. Congratulations guys!

Keep an eye on this blog over the next few weeks and join a committee meeting or two. We’ll be working on the detailed planning for 2011 and we’ll use the blog to keep you up to date.

TBAG will have a bike themed booth at this year’s ASU Family Fun Day on Saturday July 10th.

What moves you? How do you get from one place to another? Walking, driving a car, riding a bike and traveling by train are all ways to move from here to there. This exhibition highlights these and other modes of transportation in paintings, sculpture and prints. Hands-on activities throughout the exhibition will get your imagination moving, too!

Thanks to all of the volunteers that helped with April Bike Month. We had five successful events thanks to all of your help: Bike Saviours/REI Bike Drive, Mariposa Elementary Bike Rodeo, 1st Annual TBAG Bike to BBQ, Bike to Work and School Day, and the Great Bike Chase. We also saw the launch of PHXBAG(or BikePHX, or PHXBike, help decide the name!) with a First Fridays Bike Valet at the beginning of the month, and Bicycle Awareness Party at the end of the month.

Bike Saviours and Rusty Spoke collected over 75 used bikes with the help of both Valley REI locations. Both organizations would like to thank those who donated, and REI for supporting and hosting the event.

The Mariposa Elementary Bike Rodeo was also a big success with lots of kids in attendance learning to ride safely. Click here for a full recap.

It was great seeing everyone at the BBQ, we had a great turnout for our first event of this kind. We had families riding around the town lake in the morning, mountain bike rides throughout the day, and then the bike polo crew showed up in the afternoon to help us finish off the burgers and kegs. This event replaced Tempe’s Bike-a-Palooza event that was canceled due to budget cuts. TBAG will be taking a larger role hosting grassroots cycling events like this to get people to come out and have fun on their bikes.

Bike to Work and School Day gets better every year. This year we had volunteers at 7 free breakfast locations around Tempe talking to fellow bike commuters. The volunteers from each location also led rides to the Tempe Transit Center. Mariposa Elementary also promoted bike to school day for their students, there were over 100 kids that biked to school that day and we had volunteers on hand to promote cycling, safety, and fun.

The Great Bike Chase is a long standing Valley Metro event, but budget cuts increase the need for volunteer help. TBAG volunteers set up a DIY screen printing booth at Hance Park and helped people print their own bike and bike month t-shirts. Volunteers also helped with ride marshaling and bike valet parking at a Diamondbacks game. You’ll see the DIY screen printing at many of our upcoming events.

Thanks again to the volunteers, you are what makes TBAG a successful organization helping to promote cycling in Tempe and around the Valley.
