Bicycle Dreams, the award-winning feature-length documentary about the Race Across America (RAAM), will premiere in Tempe at the Madcap Theaters in Tempe on Wednesday, February 22 at 7 p.m. as part of the film’s ongoing nationwide winter tour. The screening is presented as a benefit for the Tempe Bicycle Action Group.

The event is co-sponsored by State Bicycle Co a local fixed-gear bicycle company. State Bicycle hosts a weekly LOOPS ride every Wednesday, and on the night of the show the group will meet at Madcap, check out the movie, and then head out on the ride after the movie. Keep an eye on the State Bicycle Facebook page for more ride details: http://www.facebook.com/statebicycle

Tickets will be $11 in advance and $15 at the door the night of the show. To purchase advance tickets, order online at http://www.imathlete.com/events/bicycledreams. Madcap Theaters is located at 730 South Mill St. in Tempe.

The film, which has won numerous awards at film festivals all over the world, “is an up-close look at what RAAM riders go through,” says Stephen Auerbach, the director and producer of Bicycle Dreams. “They deal with searing desert heat, agonizing mountain climbs, and endless stretches of open road. And they do it all while battling extreme exhaustion and sleep deprivation. It’s a great subject for a film.”

10/22, Race Across the Sky is a movie about this year’s Leadville Trail 100 mountain bike race which pitted 6 time winner Dave Wiens against Lance Armstrong. In case you haven’t heard, I won’t reveal who won the race, but the film looks to be promising with some incredible footage, judging by the trailer you can watch at: http://www.raceacrossthesky.com. Last I heard there’s a group meeting at The Bicycle Cellar beforehand to do a group ride down to the theater in Ahwatukee.

The midweek Phoenix Consumer Criterium Series kicks off on February 6th at Phoenix Municipal Stadium (the Oakland Athletics Spring Training Stadium). The races will run every Wednesday evening (with a few exceptions – see the flyer) through April 30th.

These races are a great introduction to road racing for the uninitiated – stop by and watch sometime – and great training for riders looking to tune their fitness.

Check it out.

Been quiet around here over the past month, but I expect you’ll see an upswing in activity on the TBAG site in coming weeks.

January marks the start of the Arizona mountain bike racing season and the Papago Peddler Short Track is kicking things off this Saturday (Jan 5th)! This is a fun event that features short race lengths (< 1hr for all categories) on a fast course through the Tempe portion of Papago. It should be a good event to get your racing legs back or to try out mountain bike racing for the first time. There will day of race registration, so come out and make a few fast laps around the park.

TBAG is helping to organize this event and we could use a few helpers. Responsibilities will be minimal and shouldn’t interfere with your ability to race. If you want to help out, drop us an email at info@biketempe.org

I also noticed that Papago is hosting a 12 hr mountain bike race on January 19th. The 12 Hours of Pain & Purpose Mountain Bike Challenge
is a fund raiser for the Sydney Hudson Foundation. It could be an interesting event and to my knowledge this is the first time anyone has promoted an endurance race in Papago. Unfortunately, the event is on a busy weekend in the calendar and conflicts with the MBAA McDowell race.
