City of Phoenix is looking to build new trail systems (SoMo, Sonoran Preserve, Dynamite). If you can, attend their planning meeting on Mon. Jan 26th. We need to make sure that we get mtn biker input to the new trail designs!

Pursuant to A.R.S. Section 38-431.02, notice is hereby given to the members of the PARKS AND RECREATION BOARD – PHOENIX SONORAN PRESERVE COMMITTEE (PSPC) and to the general public, that the PSPC will hold a meeting open to the public on January 26, 2009, at 6:00 p.m., located in Phoenix City Hall, Tenth Floor, Room 10E, 200 West Washington Street, Phoenix, Arizona.

Friday, April 25: Bike-in Movie at Scottsdale 6. See below for details.

Saturday, April 26: Cupcake Ride 3: The Cupcake Returns. We’ll meet at 10 am at the entrance to Tempe Beach Park (NW corner of Mill and Rio Salado) for the 4-mile easy ride up the greenbelt to Lulu’s Cupcakes. This is a great ride for kids and those who are new to bicycling and group-riding.

Please note there will be no bike polo today. Polo will resume as planned next Friday, May 2nd. See you all then.

Finally, this weekend is Silent Sunday at South Mountain.

The City of Phoenix is soliciting information on use of trails in Phoenix’s Mountain Parks and Preserves. If you are a mountain biker, hiker or other trail user, please take a moment to complete the survey so that your voice is heard.

Mark your calendars, the monthly car-free day at South Mountain Park, Silent Sunday, will continue through 2008. As you can see from the email below, public support for Silent Sunday has been outstanding. Please take a moment to tell the City of Phoenix “Thanks!” for continuing this program.

Silent Sunday continues throughout 2008!

We’ll provide the open road; you create your own adventure.

The Natural Resources Division Silent Sunday events have continued to be successful at South Mountain Park/Preserve. The outpouring of positive community feedback has been terrific! Bicyclists, skaters, walkers, strollers, horseback riders, etc, have participated in these environmentally responsible events. During Silent Sunday we invite the public to enjoy a free day of non-motorized recreation at South Mountain Park/Preserve.

The goals of Silent Sunday are to promote awareness of alternative modes of recreation and transportation, and to give the Preserve a day of rest from motor vehicle traffic. All park roads past the main gatehouse at the Central Avenue entrance are closed to motor vehicles during the event. Free public parking is available near the parks’ main entrance at 10919 S. Central Avenue, Phoenix 85042. The roads are reserved for the entire day for all non-motorized recreational activities.

Visitors can also tour the South Mountain Environmental Education Center (SMEEC), open from 9am – 2pm thru April, and 8am – 1pm May thru September. SMEEC will have free drop-in interpretive programs for the public during Silent Sunday; please call ahead for program times.

2008 Dates: January 13, February 24, March 30, April 27, May 25, June 22, July 27, August 24, September 28, October 26, November 23, and December 28.

Just a quick reminder that this weekend is Silent Sunday at South Mountain Park. This is a great opportunity to enjoy the roads in the park car free.

Sunday is shaping up to be a busy day. In addition to the Tour de Tempe on Sunday morning, this Sunday is also Silent Sunday at South Mountain

In conjunction with Silent Sunday, the City of Phoenix is hosting the Phoenix Outdoor Recreation Festival to celebrate National Public Lands Day. The event runs from 8 to 4 and is free. All the details are HERE

Tour de Tempe in the morning followed by a road ride to South Mountain in the afternoon to enjoy a car-free climb to the towers and to check out the festival… Sounds like a great Sunday.

Did you know that once a month the roads of South Mountain Park are car free? The next Silent Sunday is next weekend (July 22nd), so if you haven’t taken advantage of this excellent program from the Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department why not do so next Sunday? We’ll be there…

The remaining Silent Sundays for 2007 are July 22, Aug. 26, Sept. 23, Oct. 28, Nov. 18, and Dec. 23.
