Road Closures/Hazards

Share bicycle friendly routes / streets and seek help finding an appropriate route. A good North/South example would be College Avenue which runs from Guadalupe Rd all the way north to ASU Stadium. Links to mapmyride.com or bikely.com are encouraged.

Road Closures/Hazards

Wouldn't it be nice if bike-relevant street closures were listed somewhere?

For example, here are the ones that you might find helpful:

Right now there's a closure along the Indian Bend Wash (greenbelt) just south of Curry. The best detour I know of is to squeeze past the condos on the east end of Tempe Town Lake (across checkerboard tiles), then up Miller to the underpass at Curry. Difficult to describe, and you have to do some serious tree-dodging.

Also, to the best of my knowledge, Oak Street is completely closed at 52nd Street. If one is heading eastbound (i.e. on the west side of 52nd), traffic gets redirected down to McDowell, which is ridiculous for bicycles. Jeremy suggested cutting north to get around the closure, or else maybe it's possible to weave through it??

Lastly, the pinch-point on Washington headed eastbound under the Loop 202 is not fun for bicycles. Bikes are directed onto the sidewalk there anyway (although with construction constricting the road down to 1 lane in either direction it's unclear what's supposed to happen to bikes). Bikes had better ride on the sidewalk because the light rail tracks go almost parallel to the left-hand roadway. One of the Bens can tell you that it's no fun getting one's wheel caught in those tracks and flying off of one's bicycle.

Just another area which motorists receive better handling/information than a cyclist or pedestrians.
Maricopa County

Phoenix can be found here

A list of Tempe road closures/work can be emailed to you.

Often times I just look for restrictions and plan around them rather than trying to figure out what it means to me.
AZ511.com can help out, I also use this when on tour now that there is snow this is great for that. It is nice to no how long your going to be in construction zone and the lane widths. As far as accommodating the cyclist on the only road in miles, you most likely will be out of luck. Most times I find they don't even think about the cyclist when I inquire/email.

There is also restrictions on Rio Salado east of Mclintock or lateral three. I turn south on Smith so I am not sure what they entail. It gets backed up and the bike lane goes away I do believe.

Thanks for the links and reminders, Ben--I'd forgotten about Rio Salado since it has been torn up for so long. For the most part, when I've ridden along it, cars have been pretty respectful and patient, fortunately.

no problem
update on 52 street

they have Oak completely closed. You need to pick your bike up and become a pedestrian. It could be hard due to the Detour is not near and construction might block your crossing.
Currently they had one side 52st down to gravel about 10 inches below the pavement. Oak is dirt about 200 feet back on the west side. Fine on the east side.

In case you haven't been up there in a little while, Galvin Parkway, which runs through Papago, is closed until the end of October. This has been an important connector road for me for getting up to Oak Street. So I was wondering, does anyone know of any good (=of comparable distance) alternative routes to get to the other side of Papago? I haven't tried the bike trail that parallels the road--it seems like it winds around too much.
