Statement on 15th St & College Ave Crash

Join Tempe Bicycle Action Group in demanding safer streets by signing our online petition at biketempe.org/act to make Vision Zero a reality.

On Sunday, an SUV crashed into five cyclists at 15th St and College Ave, sending three to the hospital. This tragedy highlights the urgency of eliminating all traffic-related fatalities and serious injuries. We call on Mayor Woods and the Tempe City Council to take decisive action, ensuring that Vision Zero moves from aspiration to reality. The safety of our community—whether walking, biking, or using public transit—must be our top priority.

We appreciate Mayor Woods for his supportive statement today and acknowledge the resources allocated by the City Council toward building safer streets. We also thank City of Tempe staff for their ongoing efforts to improve road safety. However, while progress has been made, it’s clear that more must be done to prevent these violent crashes from endangering cyclists and pedestrians.

While not all crashes can be prevented, we must design streets that minimize the risk of fatal or serious injury. Every incident is a call to action—we cannot accept a status quo that puts people’s lives at risk.

We invite all Tempe residents to join us in demanding safer streets at biketempe.org/act. Together, we can make our roads safer for everyone and ensure that tragedies like this do not continue.
