Both the north and south bank paths along the Salt River are closed due to a natural gas line that ruptured and caught fire on Sunday morning February 28th. The closure extends from near 16th Street on the east and Central Avenue on the west. The duration of this path closure has not been determined. We are holding out hope that the south bank trail can be reopened sooner than the bridge as it seems the fire was on the north bank.
There are numerous news stories about the fire https://www.google.com/search?ei=aylBYMfbDcH4-wTF_ZOICA&q=gas+fire+closes+7th+street+Phoenix
Triathletes and other fitness and recreational path users will likely just turn around at the closure but if you have to get downtown you will have to use some surface streets. One suggestion is riding north on 16th Street and then west on University Drive and Watkins Street to Central Avenue.
