Unleash Your Kid’s Inner Cyclist: Free Bike Safety Classes

Group of young cyclists gathered around a teacher.

Parents, Gear Up for a Game-Changer!

Welcome to Tempe Bicycle Action Group’s FREE kid-focused bike safety classes โ€“ where learning and fun ride tandem! As a parent, you want your child to enjoy cycling’s freedom, but safety always comes first. That’s where we pedal in!

Our Learning Path: Safety with a Twist of Fun ๐ŸŒŸ

  • Safety First: We teach essential skills like helmet fitting, road awareness, and bike maintenance โ€“ essentials for any young rider.
  • Street Smarts: Through engaging activities, kids learn about road rules, hand signals, and staying visible.
  • Obstacle Courses & Games: They’ll maneuver through fun challenges, building skills to navigate real-world scenarios.
  • Confidence on Wheels: Our goal? To turn those wobbly first rides into confident, safe cycling.

Class Options: Tailored for All Ages ๐ŸŽ’

We offer a wide range of options for youth cycling education. Below are a few examples; however, we can craft an education program for any group and any age based on your concerns and your kids needs.

  • Bike Heroes (1 Hour): Ideal for a quick and impactful introduction to bike safety with helmet fittings, bike games, and basic introduction to road awareness. Perfect for busy schedules!
  • Bike Rodeo (K-5 grade): A deeper dive into cycling safety with practical, hands-on experiences through multiple fun stations and games. Perfect for elementary students, it’s two hours of learning, laughter, and pedal power. This is great to do in a school parking lot, either as part of a school festival or on the weekend. A full Bike Rodeo requires approximately 18 volunteers on our part and coordination with several groups including the City of Tempe, so we appreciate as much advanced notice as possible.
  • Tiger Scouts Rolling Tigers Award (1st Grade): Program for a den to fulfill the requirements for the Rolling Tigers Award. We prefer to always include requirement 5 (bicycle hike) as part of this program to model good biking behavior. Please give us ample time if you would like us to coordinate a Community Resource Officer with Tempe Police to attend for requirement 8. You can fulfill this entire requirement by attending any of our quarterly bike rodeos.
  • Pedal Pros (6-8 grade): Our middle school program is great as an after-school program or as part of a PE Class. Usually conducted over 3 one hour sessions, the first class focuses on bike handling skills; the second class is all about rules of the road, awareness, and navigating light traffic; and the third class usually involves a bike field trip to a location of the student’s choice (usually ice cream).
  • Biking Bonanza Camps: Multi-day programs for a comprehensive cycling adventure, including advanced skills and longer rides. We can host this in collaboration with another organization during school breaks (e.g. Scouting, Boys & Girls Club, Kids Zone).
  • Girl Scouts Bike Safety Patch: An unofficial patch, we have a lot of flexibility to work with you in creating a fun and engaging program for your group! We will always cover our bicycle safety basics, but we can craft a great one time or reoccurring event to inspire a life long love of cycling!
  • Scouting Cycling Merit Badge: A program to fulfill requirements for the US Scouting Cycling merit badge. This usually involves several sessions, particularly assisting with training for the 50 mile ride and providing ride support (repairs, rest stops) for the actual long ride. Given the time commitment, we prefer groups of 6+ scouts, but can work with individuals or smaller groups depending on volunteer availability. Please note, our liability insurance will not cover mountain bike activities and we can only assist with road bike rides (although our Certified Instructors have separate insurance coverage which covers some mountain bike activities).
